Marco Asensio has been ruled out of the Club World Cup semi-final after he felt discomfort in his leg.

Real Madrid were unable to include Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, and Eder Militao in their travelling squad for the Club World Cup, and they have now been hit with another casualty as Marco Asensio is ruled out of the semi-final clash against Al-Ahly as a precaution after he felt discomfort in his leg.

Asensio's situation

Ahead of Real Madrid's clash against Al-Ahly on Wednesday evening, Marca reports that Marco Asensio has been ruled out of the fixture following discomfort in his left leg while training on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old completed training fine on Tuesday—although the affected area was bandaged—but he is ruled out of the game for fear of aggravation.

With games coming thick and fast in a packed football calendar, Real Madrid decided not to risk an injury to the player and would leave him out of the matchday squad.

Further tests are reported to be planned for tomorrow, Thursday, September 9, to know the full scope of the situation.

What this means for Real Madrid

With Benzema already out, the loss of Asensio means Real Madrid only have three senior forward line players in the squad to face Al-Ahly: Rodrygo, Vinicius, and Mariano Diaz.

In defence, Real Madrid are also missing Militao and Courtois due to injury, and with the Champions League rearing its head, a possible injury to Asensio could prove costly.

As the Los Blancos' chances of winning La Liga dwindle, Real Madrid will look to the Club World Cup and Champions League for silverware. Their current injury situation could be detrimental to their ambitions.
