PSG president Nasser Al-Khalifi revealed that he attempted to discourage Barcelona's Laporta from continuing his push for the European Super League.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has revealed that he advised Barcelona president Joan Laporta to give up on plans for a European Super League.

Al-Khelaifi's Warning to Laporta

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain recently met in the Champions League and as is the tradition of the Spanish club ahead of this game, the president of the opposing teams sit to share a meal. During the meeting, Al-khelaifi urged Laporta to end the Super League agitations.

He recounted the conversation to El Mundo, saying, “I asked him, ‘When are you going to give up the stupid idea of the Super League?’ I’m sure he will give it up. It makes no sense."

Al-Khelaifi further emphasised his stance, stating, “I have always said that the Super League is not going to exist. The Champions League is the best competition in the world for everyone, and those clubs (Barcelona and Real Madrid) are playing in the Champions League because they know how important it is."

Barcelona's Persisting Super League Plans

Despite criticism, Barcelona and Real Madrid remain the only two clubs still interested in pursuing the European Super League concept. Barcelona president Laporta has been vocal in his support for the idea, suggesting that the competition could be up and running by next season.

Laporta's optimism was bolstered in December when the European Court of Justice ruled that blocking breakaway leagues is against EU law. However, several clubs mentioned by Laporta as potential participants, including Ajax, Feyenoord, and Roma, have refuted his claims, expressing their opposition to the Super League.

The recent meeting between PSG and Barcelona in the Champions League saw PSG secure a semi-final spot against Borussia Dortmund. Both clubs are expected to participate in an expanded Champions League competition next season, with PSG closing in on another French title and Barcelona set to lose the LALIGA title to Real Madrid.
