Danny Murphy has named Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak as the most disappointing signings of the Premier League summer transfer window.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has identified Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool forward Alexander Isak as the most underwhelming signings of the Premier League summer transfer window, citing unmet expectations and injury setbacks.

Gyokeres arrived at Arsenal with huge expectations after an outstanding spell at Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances, earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards.

However, the Swedish international has found life in the Premier League more demanding. He has scored 10 goals in 29 matches for the Gunners so far, a return that has sparked debate among supporters about his suitability for the English top flight.

What Murphy said

Murphy believed the disappointment stems more from expectations than outright failure.

“I wouldn’t say he’s been a disaster; he’s done okay, but I think Arsenal fans expected a lot more. There’s probably disappointment behind Gyokeres in terms of the expectation that he was going to be the missing piece,” Murphy said.

Murphy also pointed to Alexander Isak, whose move to Liverpool has yet to deliver the impact many anticipated. The 26-year-old arrived at Anfield after an impressive run at Newcastle United, where he recorded 54 goals and nine assists in 86 league games.

At Liverpool, injuries have disrupted his rhythm, limiting his influence and preventing him from settling quickly.

“Well, Isak, for obvious reasons. When you’re spending that type of money, you want them to hit the ground running. You don’t want to be patient,” Murphy explained.

While acknowledging the role injuries have played, Murphy suggested that big-money signings are judged by immediate returns.

“‘Let down’ is the wrong word. I’d say they feel disappointed in what they’ve been given back,” he added.

Isak remains sidelined as he continues his recovery, while Gyokeres could feature for Arsenal in their upcoming clash against Leeds United.
