Bright Osayi-Samuel has revealed why he chose to represent Nigeria over England.
Bright Osayi-Samuel has explained his decision to represent Nigeria at the international level, citing his strong cultural roots and the unique sense of unity within the Super Eagles as decisive factors in choosing them over England.
The defender was part of Super Eagles squad that won bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
What Osayi-Samuel said
Born in Okija, Anambra State, Osayi-Samuel moved to England at a young age and became eligible to play for England after spending 14 years in the country. Despite the opportunity, the 26-year-old opted to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has commended Super Eagles fullback Bright Osayi-Samuel for his impressive showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
“My friends have asked me the same question,” Osayi-Samuel told OmaSportsTV.
He continued, “Because I was so strongly influenced by my country, my dad and mum exposed me to Nigerian culture, Nigerian weddings, the food and everything, it shaped how I see things.”
While acknowledging the stature of England’s national team, Osayi-Samuel highlighted the sense of togetherness he experiences with Nigeria.
“When it comes to how the team works together and the feeling around the squad, I don’t think you get that same connection playing for England,” he said.
