Akwa United missed qualification to the NPFL Super 6 having finished 4th in Group A although level on points with third-placed Enyimba.

Akwa United head coach Ayodeji Ayeni has revealed that he is disappointed following his team's failure to qualify for the 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super 6 playoffs.

The final day of the 2023 season saw Remo Stars, and Enyimba all secure needed results to join already qualified Bendel Insurance in the playoffs, from Group A.

Meanwhile, Akwa United had finished 4th in Group A and level on points with third-placed Enyimba but missed out of qualification on goal difference despite a final day away win at Gombe United.

The Super 6 playoff of the 2023 NPFL season will feature three of the best-performing teams from each of the league's two groups, with teams vying for places in the next season's CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Beyond Bendel Insurance, Remo Stars, and Enyimba, the Super 6 will also feature defending champions Rivers United, Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars from Group B.

The championship playoff will see these six qualified teams attempt to finish as the best-performing side, to be crowned as Nigeria's new champions.

Ayeni calls Akwa United's season disappointing

Reacting to the concluded regular season, Akwa United's boss described it as a disappointing one, adding that the 2021 champions hoped to challenge for the league title this season.

"I'm disappointed that we were unable to make it to the Super 6 playoff," Ayeni said in an interview.

"From the beginning of the season, our target was to finish among the top three teams in Group A, so we could challenge for the league title. It's not what we wished for but that is football for you," the tactician concluded.

Akwa United will now embark on a break as they have nothing else to play for, having been already knocked out of this season's Federation Cup.
