The 21-year-old forward was substituted after 20 minutes and left the Emirates Stadium in a boot after sustaining the injury following a challenge from Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo

Gabriel Martinelli will miss the remainder of the season after suffering ankle ligament damage during Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

The 21-year-old forward was substituted after 20 minutes and left the Emirates Stadium in a boot after sustaining the injury following a challenge from Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo. He will miss Arsenal’s final two matches against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He is expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks but, barring any setbacks, should return in pre-season ahead of the new campaign

“He is in a boot,” Mikel Arteta said after Sunday’s game. “It is very uncomfortable to walk. He could not play on. We need to scan him.”

The Brazil international is the latest addition to Arsenal’s mounting injury list after Oleksandr Zinchenko and William Saliba were both ruled out for the rest of the season with injuries.

Zinchenko, 26, was forced off during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on May 7 with a calf problem while Saliba, 22, sustained a back issue in the Europa League last-16 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in March.

Arsenal are next in action against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.
