Mamelodi Sundowns' defender Brian Mandela unveils the powerhouse behind their record-breaking success

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela has unveiled the secret behind Mamelodi Sundowns' remarkable success in the current season.

The Brazilians recently secured their ninth consecutive league win with a dominant 2-0 victory over Tshwane rivals SuperSport United, catapulting them back to the summit of the DStv Premiership standings.

This achievement was made even more significant as it marked their return to domestic action after their triumph in the newly formed African Football League.

Mandela, speaking to the Sundowns media department, attributed their ongoing success to the unwavering support of the fans, emphasizing the pivotal role they play in keeping the team motivated during challenging times.

"We're on top of the log, the priority was being on top of the log and we did it. As much as we are away today (on Wednesday), we felt we are at home because it's the first game we're playing as African champions," Mandela said.

"Because of the supporters, we can't let them down, and they really help us to keep going when things are down; they support us, and everything was ok," said Mandela.

The Brazilians' recent triumph in the CAF Champions League Group A, where they secured a winning start against FC Nouadhibou, has further elevated their status in African football.

"Coach (Rhulani Mokwena) is good tactically, but he always wants us to focus on being good human beings. We always support each other regardless of who is playing; we support each other. We love each other, that's why it was easy," Mandela explained.

Injuries have posed a challenge for Mandela over the last two seasons, limiting his playing time to just six appearances in all competitions this campaign, with no goals to his name.

However, his extensive experience in South African football, having spent 10 seasons in the country, has been a valuable asset to the team.

Mandela boasts an impressive career record, with 156 appearances and 146 starts, accumulating an astounding 12,367 minutes of playing time.

Looking ahead, Sundowns will continue their pursuit of glory as they return to Premiership action next midweek with a challenging clash away to AmaZulu.
