Okumu returned from injury to help Stade Reims overcome Strasbourg to return to winning ways.

Joseph Okumu returned from injury to help Stade Reims return to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Strasbourg on Friday evening.

The Kenyan defender, who got injured during their 3-0 loss to a Kylian Mbappe-inspired PSG three weeks ago, looked assured marshaling the middle of a back three to help the Will Still-coached side get all the three points to stay in the run-in for Champions League spots.

Okumo won three of his six attempted aerial duels and won two of his three ground duels and also made two tackles and another two interceptions, underpinning his defensive solidity.

His in-possession stats were not as impressive though, considering he was accurate at passing the ball just 74 percent of the time on the night, as he made only four accurate long balls from 12 attempts.

Amir Richardson opened the scoring for Reims in the 10th minute when he got on the end of a Mohamed Daramy assist.

The provider for the first then turned out to be the scorer for the second in the 42nd minute, to help Reims take a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.

Kevin Gameiro then scored what proved to be a consolation goal for Strasbourg in the 85th minute when he netted a penalty, but it was not enough to turn around the club’s chances of equalising to give them at least one point.

Reims now sit fifth in the league on 23 points, and remain firmly in contention for Champions League places.
