Marske United resign from the Northern Premier League due to financial issues, impacting the future of its young Kenyan defender.

Kenyan defender George Gitau tenure at Marske United has taken an unexpected turn as the club announced its resignation from the Northern Premier League.

Marske United, which currently ranks 18th among 22 teams, submitted a formal resignation on January 3rd, citing persistent financial struggles throughout the season.

In a statement, the Northern Premier League expressed its regret over Marske's departure.

"On 3rd January 2024, Marske United FC tendered a resignation letter, backed by a unanimous decision from the club’s committee. We've been in constant communication with Marske’s chairman, Mark Hastings-Long, offering guidance. Despite his efforts to resolve the financial challenges, the accumulated monthly losses render the completion of the 2023/24 season unfeasible," the statement detailed.

The league conveyed its disappointment at losing a member under such circumstances and appreciated the club's recent efforts.

The board plans to meet in the coming days to discuss the matter further.

This development comes as a shock, particularly for Gitau, who recently joined Marske United on loan in January following his stint with Middlesbrough.

The 20-year-old defender has had a promising career, having played for notable clubs like Crystal Palace, Arsenal, and Brighton.

Gitau's journey with Middlesbrough started in 2020, leading to significant progress through the club's youth system.

His contributions were pivotal in the Under-18s' success during the 2020/21 season and in the Under-17s' journey to the Premier League Cup final.

Gitau also demonstrated his skills in the Premier League 2, playing in eight matches for Boro's Under-23s and scoring a crucial goal in a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

A significant moment in his career occurred this January when Gitau was named on the bench for Middlesbrough during their FA Cup clash against Brighton.
