Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla slammed LALIGA in a recent tweet.

Real Oviedo midfielder Santi Cazorla pulled no punches in his criticism of LALIGA stating that the Spanish top flight was significantly behind the Premier League in all facets.

What happened

He posted on social media following the chaotic postponement of Real Oviedo’s away match against Rayo Vallecano. The fixture was cancelled just hours before the scheduled 2:00 p.m. kick-off, with LALIGA officials citing safety concerns at the Vallecas Stadium after a failed turf replacement worsened by heavy rainfall.

The late decision left Oviedo supporters, many of whom had already travelled to Madrid, stranded, underscoring the adverse effect of the abrupt cancellation. "The reality is that LaLiga is light years behind the Premier League in every sense," the former Spain international tweeted.

The outburst was not isolated, as the 41-year-old had already labelled LALIGA a “joke” over Oviedo being repeatedly assigned the unpopular 2:00 p.m. kick-off slot, with the Rayo postponement serving as the breaking point.

Cazorla’s criticism carries added weight given his unique experience of having played in both leagues. Across six seasons at Arsenal, he won two FA Cups and two Community Shields.

Cazorla’s comments have sparked the unending superiority debate between fans of both leagues on social media. It also brings to the fore the widening financial disparity between the two competitions.
