'It is bad to get angry when not selected' - Omeruo sends warning message to Super Eagles stars

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has cautioned other Nigerian internationals against being angry when they fail to make the starting line-up for the national team.

The Leganes defender noted that it sends a 'bad message' to the coaches when players react angrily to the decisions made concerning the starting XI.

Omeruo is one of Nigeria's longest-serving players still active, with the 28-year-old defender having made his Super Eagles debut as a 19-year-old in January 2013.

The former Chelsea player noted that it takes discipline and respect for the coaches for any player who wants to succeed with the national team.

Omeruo disclosed that when other players were selected for the national team ahead of him in the past, he just put more into training while waiting for his time to come.

Omeruo said: "I have always maintained discipline and 100 per cent respect for my coaches.

"In the national team, even when other players are preferred ahead of me, I just train and wait for my opportunity to come."

The Leganes defender noted that players need to understand that the coaches face a dilemma since they have to select only 23 players as every player cannot get in the squad.

Omeruo admitted that for a country with as many talented players as Nigeria, it is a privilege to get called up to the national team irrespective of being in the starting XI or not.

“I see a lot of players get angry for not making the starting lineup, and it sends a bad message to the coach because these coaches are human," Omeruo said.

"They have 23 players and it’s difficult to select players, especially playing for Nigeria with lots of talents.

“I see it as a privilege to always get called up for the national team to represent Nigeria, whether being in the starting lineup or not. This attitude has also helped me in my club."

Omeruo has played 59 matches for the Nigerian national team since his debut in 2013, notably playing every match in the victorious 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
