Marquinhos paid tribute to the Portuguese player Diogo Jota after PSG's Club World Cup victory over Bayern.

PSG defeated Bayern 2-0, and as in other Club World Cup quarter-final matches, a minute's silence was observed in tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. A special gesture for the two Portuguese men came near the end of the match when Dembélé scored the second goal.

The Frenchman sealed qualification for the semi-finals with his goal and dedicated the celebration to Jota, imitating his signature console-in-hand pose.

After the match, Marquinhos explained the poignant moment, difficult not only for his four Portuguese international teammates—Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, and Gonçalo Ramos—but for all football fans and players alike.

"News like this is always difficult. It's true that we have Portuguese players who were playing with him just two, three weeks ago. It's all very sad; it was a work colleague. He deserves all the tributes, all the thoughts from all the players, because it's an accident, it's very hard for his family.

"Our thoughts are with him, his family, and everyone close to him," he told DAZN, via Abola, also lamenting Musiala's serious foot injury suffered in a challenge with Donnarumma.

"Also for Musiala, who got injured... We're thinking of him, hoping he recovers quickly. This is football; we never want accidents or tragedies to happen," he added, reflecting on the game and the difficulty of withstanding Bayern's attacking power.

"Well, it's always tough with two players down, but in the end, we showed the attitude, the desire we have to play as a team and help each other.

"Even with nine players, we keep going, we defend, we scored the second goal which made things a bit easier. This is the team's mentality, it's a very important competition, and we want to go as far as possible," he concluded. PSG now awaits either Real Madrid or Dortmund.
