Manchester United’s dramatic resurgence under interim head coach Michael Carrick has ignited a fresh debate about his long-term future at Old Trafford.

After Ruben Amorim's sacking at the start of January, Michael Carrick stepped in on January 13 as head coach until the end of the season.

The former United midfielder has delivered immediate results, starting with a commanding 2-0 Manchester derby win over City at Old Trafford, followed by a dramatic 3-2 triumph at Arsenal, securing United's first league win at the Emirates since 2017 and propelling them into Champions League contention.

Carrick has propelled United into 4th place, and if the momentum continues, the United hierarchy will be left with a familiar, tough decision.

Premier League legends back Michael Carrick for Man Utd job

The discussion took an interesting turn on the latest episode of The Overlap, where Arsenal legend Ian Wright championed the "in-house" solution.

"If Carrick keeps performing, then they need to give him the permanent job," Wright argued during the Stick to Football segment.

"Why would the Manchester United owners look for someone else if the guy they have in-house is already doing a good job? If it continues, then give it to him."

However, the conversation was tinged with caution. Many around the club are wary of repeating the "Solskjaer mistake", appointing a former player on a permanent basis after a series of good results.

Even Roy Keane, typically the harshest critic, found it difficult to argue with the current momentum, though he stopped short of a full endorsement.

"I hope they give it to him," Keane chimed in.

"I still don’t think it’s a good idea, but if he keeps winning games and gets them top four, then they should give him the permanent job.
