1. Early Breakthrough in Jos

Before the spotlight, there was Jos, the city where Mikel’s football story began. Obi began his football journey at 12, selected from over 3,000 youngsters by the Pepsi Football Academy. His talent led him to Plateau United, where he came through the ranks, playing in their youth team from 2002 to 2004.

He was selected for the FIFA U-17 World Championship in Finland, and he impressed scouts even as a teenager, standing out for his vision and calmness on the ball. His composure caught the attention of scouts and set the stage for his first move abroad.

After a trial with Ajax Cape Town, he eventually joined Norwegian club Lyn Oslo, marking the start of his professional career in Europe.

2. Shining at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup

If anyone doubted Mikel’s talent, the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup put all that to bed. He was instrumental in leading Nigeria to the final, where they narrowly lost to a Lionel Messi-led Argentina.

Mikel won the Silver Ball, finishing as the tournament’s second-best player behind Messi. It was the performance that confirmed his status as a generational talent.

3. The Controversial Move to Chelsea

One of the most dramatic transfer sagas in football history. In 2005, Mikel initially signed with Manchester United from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo, but Chelsea claimed they had an agreement with the player too.

The battle went to FIFA, and after months of back and forth, Chelsea won the tug-of-war, paying United a hefty compensation. Mikel finally joined Chelsea in 2006, a move that would shape his entire professional career.

4. Winning the Premier League with Chelsea

After settling into life at Chelsea, Mikel became a vital part of the squad under multiple managers. Although he rarely grabbed headlines, his reliability in defensive midfield was key.

In the 2009-10 season, Mikel helped Chelsea win the Premier League under Carlo Ancelotti. It was the first of two league trophies he would lift in London.

5. Champions League Glory in 2012

Arguably the pinnacle of his club career. In the 2012 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich, Mikel produced one of his finest performances in a Chelsea shirt.

He was composed, disciplined, and effective, anchoring the midfield and keeping Chelsea alive. Chelsea won the final on penalties, and Mikel was widely praised for his underrated but crucial role.

6. Olympic Bronze with Nigeria

Despite his club success, Mikel never turned his back on Nigeria. In 2016, he captained the Super Eagles’ Olympic team to bronze in Rio de Janeiro, scoring a goal and assisting others in the process.

Unlike many top players who skip the Olympics, Mikel embraced the challenge and showed his commitment to representing Nigeria at every level.

7. AFCON Champion in 2013

Another proud moment came in 2013, when Mikel was part of the Super Eagles team that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa. He was one of the tournament’s standout players, combining experience with leadership. Nigeria beat Burkina Faso in the final, and Mikel’s performances earned him a place in the Team of the Tournament.
