FOOTBALL FKF Cup: Hat-trick hero Gitego inspires AFC Leopards over spirited PAC University

Gitego completed a hat-trick for Leopards, two of those goals being set up by Kaycie Odhiambo, playing in midfield on the afternoon to knock out a spirited PAC University from the 2023/2024 FKF Cup.

AFC Leopards dispatched a spirited PAC University 3-0 in an FKF Cup fixture played at the Police Sacco Stadium on Sunday afternoon to get into the round of 16 of the competition.

January signing Arthur Gitego's hat-trick -his first three goals for AFC Leopards - became the first ever Rwandan to do so, to give their fans something to be ecstatic about after reports of internal striffes.

How the game spanned

Leopards enjoyed a lot of possession for the opening ten minutes but nearly conceded the opening goal from PAC University when Brighton Onyango hit a dangerous cross from the right wing keeper Humphrey Katasi failed to clear well, resulting into a corner kick.

They nearly conceded again unnecessarily in the 15th minute when PAC pressed the AFC Leopards defenders out of the game, resulting in a mix up between the center backs and Katasi yet again, forcing debutant Kennedy Owino into making a clearance off the line.

Leopards lacked decisiveness in the final third, and it was shown in the 20th minute when Boniface Kweyu attempted a shot just wide from inside the box after being set up well by Cliff Nyakeya -back in the starting line up for the first time in a while.

Left back Vincent Mahiga was another one to fail to make a chance set up well by Nyakeya count as he dallied on the ball too much, allowing PAC defender Tony Blair time to clear it away.

Striker Rather Gitego was then the next Leopards player to test the PAC goal in the 25th minute but his attempt sailed just wide.

Eventually, Leopards would break the dreadlock in the 37th minute when Kayci Odhiambo, playing as a midfielder on the afternoon, did well to smartly intercept a pass from the back before squaring to the Rwandese international who could hardly miss.

They should have scored again through Omune when Mahiga crossed a ball to Jaffari Owiti who layed it well onto the Kenyan international’s feet with his chest but it went wide.

Leopards got off to a flier in the second half with both scorer and provider for the first repeating their act in the second half.

Odhiambo received a throw-in from Mahiga before spotting Gitego, who then headed the ball into the back of the net to leave the attending AFC Leopards fans into ruptures.

Cliff Nyakeya had another attempt in the 71st minute when he successfully beat his man from the left wing, but his shot missed the target by a narrow distance.

Gitego would make history when he completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute when substitute Clifton Miheso set him up well having cut it back before he nonchalantly connected it into the back of the net.

In the end, they had enough to get the win and book their place in the round of 16 , and in so doing, have yet to lose a game in 2024.
