FIFA has announced two teams for playoffs ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup

Club León has been excluded from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld FIFA's ruling that they violated multi-club ownership rules due to Grupo Pachuca owning both León and fellow participant Pachuca.

Despite Club León's appeal, arguing that their placement in a blind trust sufficiently mitigated any conflict of interest, CAS rejected their case, confirming their exclusion while Pachuca will remain in the competition.

"The panel examined the evidence, including the Club Leon trust set up by the owners of the club, and concluded that this trust was insufficient to comply with the regulations.

"Consequently, Club Leon remains excluded from the competition and Pachuca remains qualified," CAS said.

Costa Rican side Alajuelense's appeal to take León's vacant spot was also unsuccessful.

Following this ruling, FIFA has announced a unique solution to determine León's replacement in Group D.

Instead of simply selecting the next highest-ranked team, a play-off match will be held between fellow Mexican side Club América and American club Los Angeles FC (LAFC).

Club América earned their place in this play-off as the top-ranked team in the FIFA Club World Cup ranking from the CONCACAF region that hasn't already qualified. LAFC, on the other hand, were the runners-up to Club León in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The date and venue for this decisive play-off are yet to be announced. However, the stakes are high, as the winning team will secure the final spot in Group D alongside European giants Chelsea, Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo, and Tunisian side ES Tunis.

Furthermore, participation in the tournament guarantees a minimum entry fee of $9.55 million (£7.14 million).

This unprecedented play-off adds an extra layer of intrigue to the build-up of the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States in June and July 2025.
