Manchester City defeated Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League on Saturday in Istanbul and also equalled Man United’s treble season.

The atmosphere at Istanbul was very tense on a Champions League night where all stakes were high for both teams but only one could come out victorious at the end of 90 minutes.

The game's winning goal came from midfielder Rodri in the second half, giving Manchester City their first Champions League crown.

For Pep Guardiola's team, who also won the Premier League and the FA Cup, the victory brought an end to an extraordinary season.

City, of course, had already qualified for next season’s Champions League by winning the Premier League and now that they have won the UCL, another slot has been opened for another team to play in the 2023/2024 Champions League season.

The question now is, with four teams already qualified for the UCL next season, does Man City’s Champions League win give Liverpool the chance to play in the UCL next season?

Will Liverpool play in the Champions League next season

Liverpool finished fifth on the Premier League table but with Man City’s Champions League triumph opening another slot, will it be given to Liverpool? The answer is “NO”.

According to Daily Mail’s report, the position will be given to the winner of the national league with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking that does not automatically qualify for the group stage.

Based on UEFA’s rule, the nation ranked 11th would be automatically placed in the group stage without needing to qualify.

Serbia are currently ranked 11th on the rankings but the Serbian first-division champions, though, have already been assured of a spot.

The Serbian first division got the slot because tenth-place Russia has been excluded from European competitions after invading Ukraine.

As a result, the Ukraine League who are ranked 12th will be getting the extra slot created by Manchester City after winning the Champions League.

Can five teams from the EPL play in the UCL?

According to the rule book, “Yes” the same Champions League season can have five Premier League teams.

This can only happen if an English club had won the Champions League or Europa League this year and did not finish the season in the top four of the Premier League.

As it stands, Liverpool will not be playing in the 2023/2024 Champions League season but will be playing in the Europa League instead.

Liverpool will have to work their way back to the Champions League next season by either making the top four spot and qualifying automatically or by winning the Europa League next season.
