After announcing his resignation as Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales has made an odd claim about Africa as his reason for calling it quits

Luis Rubiales, who made his decision to finally resign his role as president of the Spanish FA public in an interview with Piers Morgan has also made some strange claims concerning Africa and Spain

Rubiales announces resignation

Rubiales had been under pressure to resign as president of the RFEF following the Kissgate scandal that saw him vilified for kissing Spanish World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso allegedly without consent live on television.

The football administrator finally cowed to pressure from public observers as he announced that he would be leaving his role as RFEF’s president, although an official communication by the Spanish FA is still pending.

Rubiales had been under a FIFA investigation for his behaviour after the Women’s World Cup final, and put an end to the saga by announcing on the PiersUncensored show that he was ready to resign as the president of the RFEF.

Rubiales makes unusual claim as reason for resignation

Despite his decision to resign, Rubiales still maintains his innocence amidst allegations of sexual misconduct, and when asked why he decided to resign, the former Levante defender gave an unusual answer far removed from the Kissgate scandal.

He told Piers Morgan, “I have made this decision to resign after making sure my departure will contribute to the stability that allows Europe and Africa to remain united in their dream of 2030.

“I hope we are still able to bring the largest event in the world to our country.”

Spain are involved in a joint bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030 alongside Portugal and Morocco and while that remains an important objective, Rubiales using that as an excuse to leave his post amidst the Kissgate scandal will come off as strange to most.
