Jordi Cruyff narrated how Barcelona delayed Barcelona's debut.
Former Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff recently revealed that Lamine Yamal was close to leaving the club before even making his debut.
Yamal is the youngest debutant in Barcelona history, making his first appearance in April 2023 aged 15 years and 291 days. However, he could have even debuted earlier but for contractual problems, according to Jordi.
What Jordi Cruyff said
The former Manchester United star explained that Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona’s head coach at the time, was immensely impressed by Yamal’s talent from the teenager’s first training session and wanted to hand him a debut earlier than it happened; however, the club decided to delay it until they had him tied down to a contract.
"There was a risk that Lamine would leave Barca,” Cruyff said, per Sport. “We postponed his debut until we had the feeling that we were covered. He is exceptional. To take care of him, there is already the club. I’m not inside anymore.
"The first time he went to train [with the first team], after five minutes the coach, who was Xavi, looked at us and said 'this is special'. I wanted to give him his debut sooner, but we didn't have a contract with the boy so we had to first make sure that he was going to be ours for many years. Even the veterans saw that he was something different, very difficult to find."
