Barcelona reject Chelsea player swap offer for 22 year-old talented midfielder
LaLiga giants Barcelona have rejected Chelsea’s offer of a swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku.
Burnley reached an agreement with Chelsea, allowing Ugochukwu to travel for medical tests and complete the move to Turf Moor. The transfer marks another significant outgoing for Chelsea, following the permanent exit of striker Armando Broja.
The club is focus on trimming their squad ahead of the new season, with other departures also in progress, as confirmed by notable journalists David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano.
Ugochukwu’s career at Stamford Bridge saw him sign a seven-year contract in 2023 after moving from his boyhood club Rennes. However, the youngster was reduced to limited opportunities in his debut Premier League season, where he made 15 appearances.
Chelsea loaned him out to Southampton for the 2024-25 campaign, where Ugochukwu was praised by Paul Onuachu, making 31 appearances, scoring three goals and providing three assists. Despite his impressive display, Southampton were relegated to the Championship.
Known for his versatility in central midfield, Ugochukwu is expected to play a key role for Burnley under the guidance of head coach Scott Parker, with his arrival following the departure of key midfielder Josh Brownhill, who left Burnley on a free transfer.
Internationally, Ugochukwu remains eligible to represent Nigeria but has thus far played extensively for France at youth levels, including 27 appearances and representing the France Under-23s.
Chelsea’s decision to let go of Ugochukwu signals a shift in their squad composition under manager Enzo Maresca, aiming to balance their roster and fund incoming transfers.
For Ugochukwu, the move offers a fresh start and an opportunity to establish himself firmly in the Premier League with Burnley.
