Burnley vs Fulham - Bassey, Chukwueze and Iwobi sign-out for AFCON in style as Cottagers return to winning ways
The Cottagers head into the game preparing for a one month absences of three star players who are heading for the African Cup of Nations.
They also needed to bounce back from their disappointing defeat last weekend against Crystal Palace.
With Marco Silva instilling confidence in his team, they did a good job, sealing a 3-2 victory against Burnley on the night.
As it happened
Due to the suspensions of Kyle Walker and Lucas Pires, Scott Parker was forced to make two changes to the Burnley side that lost to Newcastle in their previous match. Axel Tuanzebe and Quilindschy Hartman were brought into the starting lineup.
Despite consecutive home losses, Fulham's manager, Marco Silva, opted for only a single substitution in the lineup, as reported by BBC.
The match marked the final appearance for Super Eagles players Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, and Cavin Bassey before they depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Fulham started the game brightly and got the first goal in the ninth minute after Harry Wilson swung in a corner and Hartman missed his attempted clearance at the near post allowing Emile Smith Rowe to tap in from close range.
Despite, Fulham’s early control, Lesley Ugochukwu got the equaliser for Burnley after a throughball from Josh Cullen was finished by the midfielder.
Bassey then restored the Cottager’s lead in the 31st minute after leaping ahead of the Burnely defenders to head home Wilson’s cross.
In the second half, Chukwueze made a brilliant run and delivered an insightful pass to Wilson, who calmly slotted the ball past the goal keeper.
Oliver Sonne made it 3-2 late in the game after Calvin Bassey accidentally flicked a cross over to Sonne, who controlled it well on his chest and guided the ball past Leno, as Burnley pushed to salvage a draw.
However, the Cottagers held on for the remainder of the games, with the match ending in a 3-2 victory for Silva's team.
