Bayern Munich could have it's first Ballon d'Or winner since 1981, according to Lothar Matthaus.

They are ecstatic with Michael Olise at Bayern Munich, according to reports, so much so that legendary Bavarian midfielder Lothar Matthaus believes he could be the next French Ballon d'Or winner after Ousmane Dembele

What Mathaus said

Not many footballers—especially not those who played as central or defensive midfielders—know the feeling of winning the Ballon d'Or.

This is not the case for Matthaeus, however, who won France Football's coveted prize in 1990, elevating his credentials to discuss potential winners.

Nowadays, the retired German midfielder is a football analyst/commentator, and in a recent conversation with Bild, he touted French-Nigerian winger Olise as a Ballon d'Or-winning talent.

"He has everything an outstanding footballer needs,” Matthaeus said. “I see no limits for him. And the example of Ousmane Dembélé shows that a winger can become a world-class footballer.

"It always depends on the success of the team, especially in the Champions League – but yes, I believe Olise can [win the Ballon d'Or]."

The German champions signed Olise from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2024, and the French winger needed little time to establish himself as a key factor in Vincent Kompany's frontline.

Last season, he scored 20 goals and provided 23 assists, which earned him 30th place on the Ballon d'Or rankings—which many believe was too low a placement for the season he had.

He has continued his exploits this season scoring four goals and providing three assists in seven games this season.
