Australian female footy stars reportedly apprehended with Illegal substance

Two AFLW players from the Sydney Swans' women's team have allegedly been caught with cocaine during the off-season.

The unnamed stars were charged by police late last year, receiving conditional release orders akin to good behaviour bonds in Victoria.

The AFL has acknowledged awareness of the incident, while the Swans, when approached by Nine, declined to comment, though key officials were reportedly aware of the issue for months.

Footy's Relationship with Drugs Highlighted Once Again

The latest story underscores footy's ongoing relationship with drugs, with Melbourne Demons star Joel Smith facing potential consequences after a failed test.

Unlike the two unnamed AFLW players, as reported by Daily Mail, Smith allegedly failed the test during competition, potentially resulting in a more severe punishment if found guilty.

Smith has been provisionally suspended since October following a positive cocaine test notified after the Demons' round-20 win over Hawthorn on August 20.

"Sports Integrity Australia (SIA) has charged Smith with three anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs) of the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code over alleged 'trafficking or attempted trafficking' of cocaine to third parties," confirmed the AFL last month.

“Under the code, trafficking includes "selling, giving, transporting, sending, delivering or distributing a prohibited substance by an athlete … to any third party."

Investigation on cocaine usage

Reports from News Corp via Daily Mail, suggest that officials discovered multiple text messages sent by Smith referencing cocaine after reviewing his phone.

In one message allegedly sent to Demons teammates last year, Smith purportedly offered a quantity of the drug in question. The exact amount offered or the number of teammates the message was sent to remains unconfirmed.

"Investigations revealed another ADRV for possession of cocaine on September 9, 2022," stated AFL sources.

Smith, facing a maximum four-year ban under the AFL's anti-doping code for his positive cocaine test, will remain provisionally suspended, unable to train or play with his teammates.

The newly asserted violations will be further investigated by SIA, with the 27-year-old's matter potentially heading to the AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal in the coming months.
