Malawian international Gerald Phiri Jr is among the foreign-based players who have been evacuated from Sudan.

Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman have evacuated their foreign players to France as fierce fighting continues to rage in the country's capital, Khartoum.

The Sudani Premier League heavyweights worked with the help of the Egyptian government to move all the players and members of the technical bench away from the conflict.

Among the players evacuated is Malawian international Gerald Phiri Jr, whose parents had pleaded with their government to evacuate him as they had been worried since the beginning of the war.

The 28-year-old former Baroka FC striker has since communicated to his parents that he is safe.

“Phiri was evacuated from the country together with other players and entered Egypt as a way to protect the players before being airlifted to France,” reads a report by Lilongwe-based television Mibawa TV.

Al Hilal leads the Sudani Premier League but has not played any fixture since April 14 because of the suspension of football due to the war.

Various media reports in Khartoum indicated that the Sudani Premier League Chairman of the Competitions Committee, El Fateh Bani, announced last Tuesday that the Organising Committee decided to suspend the League games indefinitely.

Sudan is experiencing a vicious power struggle between the regular army and a powerful paramilitary force, leading to violence across Sudan for more than a week.

Phiri joined Al Hilal in November 2021 from South Africa Premier Soccer League side Baroka FC on a three-year deal and has competed in the African Champions League for the past two seasons.
