AFC Leopards' plans to sign a key Tusker FC defender are postponed as he extends his contract with his current club.

AFC Leopards may have to wait another six months to renew their efforts in signing Tusker FC's stalwart defender Michael Kibwage.

In a surprising turn of events, the 25-year-old ex-Sofapaka center-back announced his decision to extend his contract with Tusker, dampening the spirits of the Leopards who had been eyeing his services.

Kibwage, who has been pivotal in Tusker's defensive line-up, has signed a new deal that effectively keeps him at Ruaraka until the end of the current season.

This development comes as a significant setback for AFC Leopards, who saw Kibwage as a crucial addition to their squad.

The defender's commitment to Tusker puts a temporary halt to any potential transfer, at least for the ongoing mid-season transfer window.

"Tusker opened its doors to me when I had not played competitive football for over a year. They gave me an opportunity and were patient with me," Kibwage expressed in a heartfelt note on X.

"I'm glad to repay this faith by staying on until the end of the season. Focus on the next 17 matches!" he added, highlighting his dedication to his current club.

Initially serving as a backup centre back at Tusker, Kibwage has since risen through the ranks to become a key player.

His influence on the team is not just limited to his defensive skills but also extends to his role as the vice-captain.

Under his robust defense, Tusker is poised to make a strong push for the league title this season.

Kibwage's history with AFC Leopards adds an interesting dimension to this saga. Having played for the Leopards from January 2017 to October 2018, after his transfer from Kakamega Homeboyz, he made his mark in the FKF Premier League.

His debut for AFC Leopards came in a match against none other than Tusker FC in 2017, making the current situation somewhat of a full circle.

AFC Leopards' interest in Kibwage is well-founded, given his impressive track record and growth as a player.

However, with his new contract at Tusker, the Leopards might need to explore other options or wait until July, when Kibwage’s new deal is set to expire, to attempt another bid for his signature.
