Rightly following in the footsteps of the legendary Innocent Egbunike, rising star Samuel Ogazi blazed to the second-fastest time by an African in history at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
In an exceptional race at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Nigeria's sprint sensation Samuel Ogazi, dubbed the next Innocent Egbunike, delivered a stunning performance that saw him rise to No.2 on the African all-time list.
The 19-year-old reigning NCAA outdoor champion clocked a blistering new personal best of 44.85s, thus establishing him as the fastest African in the event this season. He now ranks second globally, trailing only Jonathan Simms of the United States, who posted a 44.62s earlier in January.
With this run, the University of Alabama junior, who was a finalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, becomes the second-fastest African man in indoor 400m history. He is surpassed only by fellow Nigerian Ezekiel Nathaniel, who holds the continental record at 44.75s.

Udodi Onwuzurike: Nigerian star defeats Olympic champion Noah Lyles in belt-winning sprint race
Nigeria's speed king Udodi Onwuzurike showed a glimpse of the form he's in this season after defeating American Olympic champion Noah Lyles in a sprint race.
Ogazi also joins Nathaniel as one of only two African athletes to ever break the 45-seconds barrier indoors.
On the all-time world list, his performance makes him the 20th athlete to run a sub-45-second indoor 400m, tying him with Fred Kerley for 13th place. His time also shattered the previous facility record of 45.40 at the Albuquerque Convention Center, which was held by Auhmad Robinson.
This remarkable achievement solidifies Ogazi's reputation not only as Nigeria's top sprinting talent but also as one of the most exciting young quarter-milers in international athletics today.
