During their weekly sprint challenge in training to crown the Pure Athletics Group One Champion for the week, Onwuzurike stunned Lyles to a brilliant win, thus dethroning the American six-time world champion, who has held the title since the group's creative concept started.

After the race, Lyles showed the spirit of sportsmanship by congratulating him, but wrote a comeback comment under the post: "Sometimes you got to let the Belt move to make the plot thicken."

Onwuzuike's victory, despite being a training race, is a pointer to the form he's in, and can be the needed confidence to go on to win more important races as the season progresses.

He kicked off his season at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in New York, where he clocked 6.68s to finish a respectable fifth in the men's 60m event.

Udodi Onwuzurike's bright career profile

Onwuzurike has been rated as a top talent since his breakout year in 2021, when he won the 200m title at the world U20 championships in Nairobi, Kenya. He also won the NCAA title in 2023, before signing a professional contract with Adidas and joining the Pure Athletics training group.

Having had a rough couple of years plagued by injuries, the talented speedster will be hoping this year can bring him better fortunes, gunning to reclaim his spot among the world's best sprinters.

Onwuzurike has 100m personal best of 9.92s, a time he achieved in 2023, and in the 200m, his personal best is 19.76s, set during the 2023 season.
