NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said the Super Eagles are on autopilot for success under Éric Chelle after an impressive AFCON outing.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has expressed strong confidence in the Super Eagles’ future, declaring that the national team is now “close to running on autopilot” under the current technical crew led by Franco-Malian coach Éric Chelle.

Gusau made the remarks following Nigeria’s impressive showing at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third and recorded several historic milestones.

Under Chelle’s guidance, Nigeria scored a record 14 goals, the highest tally ever by the Super Eagles in a single AFCON tournament. The team also remained unbeaten in regulation time across all seven matches.

Nigeria impressed against Africa’s elite, holding their own against continental heavyweights such as Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt.

East African sides Tanzania and Uganda, both co-hosts of the next AFCON alongside Kenya were also convincingly defeated by the Super Eagles.

What Gasau said

Gusau, who also serves as President of the West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU B), believed the AFCON performance marks a major turning point for Nigerian football, particularly after the disappointment of missing out on consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments.

According to him, the Super Eagles have rediscovered their identity and are now poised to reach new heights on the continental and global stages.

The NFF president stressed that preparations for the next AFCON begin immediately, with no room for complacency.

“The journey to the next AFCON starts immediately (in March). We do not have the luxury of time to continue dwelling on what we have done here. We must set to work immediately,” Gusau said.

Gusau concluded by expressing optimism about the depth and quality of the current squad, hinting that even better performances lie ahead once injured players return.

“For now, we are excited about the squad that we have. Remember also that a couple of very good players missed the tournament as a result of injury. The bottomline is that the future looks very bright,” he added.
