‘It doesn't take anything away’ - Osimhen claims he is not after Yekini's record, sees him as best Super Eagles striker
Nigeria's Super Eagles booked their spot in the semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with an impressive 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria on Saturday evening.
Second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams were enough to overcome the Desert Warriors and secure their elimination from the competition.
The header by Osimhen, which was his fourth in the competition, keeps him in contention for the golden boot.
Osimhen speaks on breaking Yekini’s record
Speaking after the game, in an exclusive with Pulse Sports, Osimhen was asked if he was always thinking about Rashidi Yekini’s record when he plays for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
He replied, “No, not at all, because personally for me, I've said it countless times, I think; it doesn't matter if I equal the record or I pass it.
“I think Mr Rashidi Yekini is the best striker the Super Eagles have ever produced, and for me, I have the likes of Odion Ighalo that have inspired me also to try to do my best for my team.
“So I think, for me, it doesn't take anything away from Yekini as the greatest striker the country has ever produced.
“I'm just doing my best and of course, it is amazing to be part of the history of the Super Eagles. So I'm just trying to win something important for my country and with my teammates.”
The Super Eagles are now set to face off against Morocco, the tournament's host nation, in the semi-finals and Osimhen will be looking to get on the score sheet.
