Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed his favourites to lift the AFCON 2025 trophy in Morocco.

Nigeria concluded their group-stage campaign at AFCON 2025 with a perfect record, securing a clinical 3–1 victory over Uganda at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

Having already dispatched Tanzania and Tunisia, the Super Eagles finish Group C with a maximum nine points, a feat that firmly establishes their credentials as tournament favourites.

Troost-Ekong backs Super Eagles to win AFCON

Reacting to the team’s imperious form, former captain William Troost-Ekong praised the steady progression under head coach Éric Chelle. Despite retiring from international football just weeks before the tournament, the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament remains a vocal supporter of the squad he once led.

“Great start to the tournament so far. Getting better by the game,” Troost-Ekong said.

“I love to see that, besides the regular performers, many players in the squad are taking their chances and contributing to the momentum.

"They are my favourites to win this year.”

His endorsement was vindicated on the pitch as a heavily rotated Nigerian side dominated the Cranes. Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a tidy finish, his first international goal in four years.

The second half belonged to Raphael Onyedika, who effectively ended the contest with a quick-fire brace following a red card for Ugandan goalkeeper Salim Magoola.

Although Rogers Mato netted a late consolation for the ten-man Cranes, Nigeria’s dominance was never in doubt. The Super Eagles now march into the Round of 16 with significant momentum.

While their knockout opponents are yet to be finalised, the blend of clinical finishing and squad depth has left the Nigerian camp, and their former skipper, convinced that a fourth AFCON title is well within reach.
