The potential return of the academy graduate would reopen one of the most sensitive chapters in the club’s recent history.

Greenwood links resurface after strong Marseille form

According to Football Insider, United have held internal discussions about re-signing Greenwood, who left the club following serious legal and reputational issues.

Greenwood came through the ranks at United and was once viewed as a long-term attacking cornerstone before being offloaded after he faced charges relating to attempted rape and assault.

Although the Crown Prosecution Service later discontinued the case due to the withdrawal of key witnesses, United carried out their own internal investigation and ultimately decided that keeping him would be a public relations disaster.

He was sent on loan to Getafe in 2023, where he impressed, before completing a £26 million move to Marseille in the summer of 2024.

Since then, Greenwood has rebuilt his career in France, scoring 42 goals and providing 12 assists in 63 appearances over the past 18 months. His form has attracted interest from clubs such as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, underlining how much his market value has recovered.

Buy-back clause and financial implications for United

United sold Greenwood below his perceived market value but protected themselves with key clauses, including a 50% sell-on clause and a potential buy-back option. The Football Insider report claims that this buy-back clause could allow United to re-sign the 24-year-old for a fee lower than his current valuation.

Financially, United could benefit more by letting another club buy Greenwood, as they would stand to earn an additional £25 million or more through the sell-on clause. However, the report suggests that internal talks have taken place about a direct return, a move that would almost certainly reignite intense scrutiny and backlash.

The same report adds that United are prioritising midfield reinforcements and could consider selling captain Bruno Fernandes to fund those plans, making a Greenwood return far from certain.

Even so, the mere possibility highlights how complex and controversial United’s decision-making could become in the months ahead.
