Before his move to Europe, he gained experience in the Nigerian domestic leagues with ABS FC and Nasarawa United.

The defender, who has emerged as one of Nigeria's most promising defensive talents over the past year, was widely expected to make the final cut for the tournament following a series of impressive performances for the senior team.

However, a significant injury sustained just weeks before the competition has sidelined the young defender until the new year, crushing what would have been a landmark moment for both him and his mentor, Moses Simon.

Simon speaks on Frederick's absence

Speaking to ESPN, Simon expressed the emotional impact of Fredrick's absence. "It is very emotional for me," Simon stated.

"It is an unbelievably big dream to play with the young one you helped to the top. The feeling is something else. It is like a father and son playing alongside each other."

"It is a thing of joy for me. I'm proud of myself, proud of what I'm doing, and proud of the people around me who encourage and assist me as well.

“But I am sad that he will not be here. Not because I just want us to play together, but because he would help us if he were here."

Benjamin Fredrick's ascent has been nothing short of remarkable. After his international debut at the Unity Cup in May, he quickly established himself as a reliable presence in Nigeria's defence, featuring in all four of the team's recent World Cup qualifiers.

His composed displays, particularly in the crucial playoff matches against Gabon and DR Congo in November, made his inclusion in the AFCON squad seem a certainty.

This makes his untimely injury all the more devastating for a Super Eagles side that had begun to depend on his defensive stability.
