NUGA, FISU celebrate International Day of University Sport

The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) declared September 20th as the day for the International Day of University Sport (IDSU) in 2016.

Nigerian University Games (NUGA) has joined other universities across the world to celebrate the International Day of University Sport (IDSU).

The United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO) declared September 20th as the day for the International Day of University Sport (IDSU) in 2016.

NUGA celebrating this year with the theme; A Drug-Free Nigerian Campus, aimed to help create links between the universities and their local communities with sport, physical activity and healthy living playing the leading role.

NUGA, Chidiebere Ezeani, the Acting General Secretary, told Pulse Sports that the day provides an opportunity to share expertise on major problems concerning the development of sport and the University Sports Movement Worldwide, as well as to raise awareness of the value of sport in educational institutions.

NUGA celebrates the International Day of University Sport (IDSU).

She said, "We actually started celebrating this in 2020, and it encourages everyone to celebrate. Our theme for this year is drug-free Nigerian campuses, and we are working with the NDLEA to fight against drug abuse.

"We will be having our annual conference in University of Jos later next month. The celebration is all about we represented and we are also getting the commuinty involved in it."

Meanwhile, International University Sports Federation (FISU) Acting President Leonz Eder insists on the necessity for all to move and do some exercise to stay healthy.

He said, "You know, majority of us, we are not elite sports people, We try to do some exercise in our daily life. Just don't take the elevator, take the stairs, Or if you come by bus, get out of the bus one station earlier and walk to your office or to your university or to the gym.

"Try to do some sports with your family members, with your students, with your colleagues, with your friends. Play some sports, then you have a lot of fun and check it out at your National University Sports Federation what they are offering.

"The International Day of University Sports is all about you students, be active, have a healthy lifestyle on campus and in your daily life."
