The African Table Tennis champion was knocked out by a Portuguese star in the first round of the WTT Contender.

The African Table Tennis Champion, Quadri Aruna,  was knocked out by a Portuguese star, Marcos Freitas in the first round of the WTT Contender.

Freitas defeated Aruna in the first round of the WTT Contender Doha 2023 in Qatar.

Aruna suffered an early defeat in Qatar after losing the first round to Freitas 3-1, on Wednesday.

Aruna started the game on a high note winning the first round 11-5 before Freitas came behind to win three straight (11-9, 11-7, 13-11) sets to send the German-based player out of the championship.

With the win, Freitas has booked a round 16 clash with China’s Zhou Qihao.

The African Champion was listed as the number two seed in the men’s singles behind Brazil’s Hugo Calderano.

Also, an African representative in the Women’s singles, Hana Goda was knocked out by Kuai Man in three sets game.

Aruna starts 2023 on a poor form

The Nigerian has not been too good in 2023, he was earlier knocked out of WTT Contender in Durban in the Quarterfinal.

Ukraine’s Yaroslav Zhmudenko beat Aruna in three sets game in the quarter-final 3-0 (11-8,11-7, 11-3) to knock him out WTT Contender in Durban, South Africa.

His first game in Qatar in the year see him bowing out of the WTT Contender in Doha.

Meanwhile, Aruna ranked the best in Africa following the release of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ranking on Monday, where he was rated 14th in the World.
