NUGA begins trials for World University Games in Edo

100 student-athletes will represent Nigeria at the competition that will take place from July 27 to August 8 in Chengdu, China.

The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) begins trials for the World University Games at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Monday.

The trials started on Monday, May 8–14, in Benin City, Edo State.

Pulse Sports reports that 100 student-athletes will represent Nigeria at the competition that will take place from July 27 to August 8 in Chengdu, China.

The trials will feature seven sports, including athletics, badminton, judo, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and tennis, and will be held at the University of Benin and Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.

NUGA Ag. Secretary General, Chidiebere Ezeani, stated that the trials will allow the students to demonstrate their skills.

She said, “The trials are also an opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their skills and ability to compete at the highest level, inspiring others to take up sports and pursue their athletic dreams.

“The NUGA World University Games Trials are an important milestone in the Nigerian sports calendar, and we encourage everyone to come out and support our talented athletes.”

Nigeria is expected to compete for honors in seven games, including track and field, swimming, badminton, judo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, and Tennis.

NUGA has regularly produced World class athletes who took part in the Games in the past.

Student-athletes from all over the world come together every two years for the World University Games, a multisport competition where they compete for medals in a variety of sports.
