In March last year, the Badminton World Federation banned Kenya from international competitions.

In a move to breathe badminton back to life in the country, the National Olympic Committee has announced that players will now be allowed to participate in international tournaments.

In March last year, the Badminton World Federation banned Kenya from international competitions due to leadership wrangles.

In their meeting held on Monday, May 15, NOC-K also announced that elections will be held on Friday, August 25.

After the elections, NOC-K will be keen enable players to compete and proudly represent Team Kenya and they will offer support to the new executive team for approximately six months to establish robust structures and formulate effective policies.

The meeting was a culmination of players’ petitions through NOC-K Athlete Representative Humphrey Kayange as they were missing international events.

This prompted NOC-K to intervene and after a sitting by the council of the BWF, they advised on an administrative process for the Entry of Players. The meeting also shed light on the challenges faced in the past and outlined a roadmap for progress.

One of the primary objectives of the gathering was the constitution of a committee to spearhead the program. This committee will play a pivotal role in registering players, clubs, and counties, aiming to establish a comprehensive registry within the sport.

By ensuring all players are duly registered, the committee intends to facilitate player representative selections exclusively from registered players, fostering a fair and inclusive decision-making process.

The meeting also emphasized the significance of the registration process for clubs and counties. NOC-K also announced that on Friday, July 21, a formal meeting will be held to review the constitution under which badminton will operate.

The committee will distribute different drafts of the constitution, encouraging stakeholders to provide their input. Subsequent meetings will aim to reach an agreement on the final constitution, guided by compliance with legal mandates and the expectations of the Badminton Federation.

During the meeting, Kayange also encouraged the importance of granting badminton players the opportunity to contribute to the sport.

The composition of the committee was also addressed, with John Ogolla, Secretary General for the Weightlifting Federation, being suggested as the chair.

To maintain objectivity and avoid biases, the committee will comprise individuals who have no direct affiliation with badminton.

Player representatives, if registered by June, will be selected to join the committee, ensuring that players' interests remain at the forefront of administrative decisions. Communication channels and forms will be provided to facilitate effective communication within the committee.

Furthermore, recognizing the significance of inclusion, a recommendation was made to incorporate Para badminton as a stakeholder within the committee. This step aims to ensure that the voices and needs of Para badminton athletes are fully represented in the decision-making processes.

Francis Mutuku, leading the team expressed optimism regarding the future of the Badminton Federation, acknowledging the historical challenges in leadership within the sport.

Mutuku revealed that NOC-K has been granted the authority to support the process until a duly constructed Board of Executive Committee is established, ensuring the smooth functioning and development of badminton in Kenya.
