Amidst administrative uncertainties, the She Cranes were not in a position to "mobilize on very short notice" in the wake of the restructuring at the Uganda Netball Federation.

The Uganda national netball team, the She Cranes, pulled out from the already-started 2023 African Netball Championship that got underway yesterday in Botswana.

Amidst administrative uncertainties, the She Cranes were not in a position to "mobilize on very short notice" in the wake of the restructuring at the Uganda Netball Federation.

According to the observer, Moses Mwase, the chairperson of the recently appointed ad-hoc normalization committee for Netball, stressed that the team cannot participate under the circumstances.

The aforementioned comes after the National Council of Sports (NCS) annulled the certificate of recognition for the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF).

It all started when the elected UNF president, Sarah Babirye Kityo, clashed with NCS general secretary Patrick Ogwel over mistrust and accountability issues.

Kityo accused Ogwel of forcing the federation to account for funds that were never provided for the team, while Ogwel indicted the former for funds mishandling.

The pulling out from the African Netball Championship comes as a shame, as the She Cranes have repeatedly raised the country's flag sky-high at every opportunity on both the continental and global stages.

They managed a fifth-place finish in the world and emerged as the best African team at the 2023 Netball World Cup held in South Africa.

It's not certain when permanent leadership will come in at the UNF as Mwase was reluctant to place a timeline.

"That is part of our terms of reference, but right now, it will come a little bit late because you don’t just organize elections; you have to prepare the ground and look into the constitution, so you cannot just jump into elections now,” he said.

The She Cranes are set to participate in the England-organized Vitality Netball Nations Cup early next year, but it's still uncertain whether they'll form part.
