Pulse Sports previews Sunday afternoon's clash between Liverpool vs Manchester City, including team news, head to head, score prediction and betting tips

Manchester City are seeking to beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 2021 to close the gap to Arsenal at the summit and steady the ship in a faltering title race that saw them win only one match in January.

Liverpool vs Manchester City betting tips

  • Both teams to score

  • Over 1.5 goals

Liverpool vs Manchester City preview

It might not quite be the title-defining clash of titans we are used to seeing – for Liverpool, at least – but this latest edition of Liverpool v Manchester City just might evoke the spirit of the Jurgen Klopp vs Pep Guardiola faceoff of times past.

Nothing less than a win will do for Manchester City as they struggle to play catch up in the title race, given that Arsenal might be nine points clear by the time the ball is kicked at Anfield.

Above all, that alone should help focus minds and ensure they play like they did in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur; aggressive, forward-pressing football that saw an attack-minded lineup ease into a 2-0 lead.

However, Manchester City have been guilty of being too passive at times this season, as evidenced by the second half at Tottenham Hotspur stadium, and the form of Liverpool’s attackers, especially Hugo Ekitike and the awakening Florian Wirtz, forebodes danger.

Ekitike currently averages a goal or an assist every 112 minutes in the Premier League this season, while Wirtz has 9 goal involvements in his last 11 matches in all competitions. The pair have combined for six goals in all competitions this season, more than any other Premier League duo, scoring and assisting three goals each.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League matches and are beginning to look like a serious force again, especially in attack, and there is no doubt they will come out swinging on Sunday afternoon.

However, Arne Slot’s side have shown that they can be hurt by direct football – a style we’ve seen Pep Guardiola pull out of the hat on occasion this season – and they remain defensively fragile, as evidenced by the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth.

Also, City followed Liverpool's lead by taking down Newcastle 3-1 in Wednesday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg - setting up a Wembley date with Arsenal in the process - and their 3-0 win over Liverpool in November means that they are just 90 minutes away from a first-ever Premier League double over the Reds.

In what is being rumored by some to be Pep Guardiola’s last season with the Cityzens, he just might conquer that peak.

Liverpool vs Manchester City head-to-head

Historically, Liverpool has dominated the fixture (110 wins across all competitions, compared to City's 61 wins), though Manchester City has closed the gap significantly during the Premier League era.

In their most recent encounter on November 9, 2025, Manchester City secured a dominant 3-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium with goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku.

However, the Cityzens lost both home and away to Liverpool last season by 2-0 each, and the last time Manchester City won at Anfield was on February 7, 2021, with a 4-1 victory in the Premier League. This remains their only win at Liverpool's home ground in their last 22 league visits.

Liverpool vs Manchester City team news

For Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong remains out of Sunday's match through injury along with Conor Bradley, while Joe Gomez could play a part. This could mean Dominik Szoboszlai playing at right back again. Alexander Isak remains out with a leg injury.

Bernardo Silva remains a doubt for City after missing out on the mid-week Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle. Ruben Dias is available, though, and Pep Guardiola revealed that John Stones has returned to training. Josko Gvardiol (calf), Mateo Kovacic (ankle), Jeremy Doku (calf) and Savinho (thigh) remain out.

However, the biggest news is Erling Haaland, who Guardiola said he doesn’t know if he will start on Sunday; remember the Norwegian was benched in favor of Omar Marmoush against Newcastle. Whether this is as a result of Haaland’s dip in form or just mind games remains to be seen.

Liverpool vs Manchester City prediction

Both teams enter gameweek 25 with an identical record from their last six top-flight games - one defeat, four draws and a measly one win. Neither has provided enough consistency to comfortably predict an accurate outcome. Yet, that very inconsistency is what promises chaotic moments and exciting attacking football at both ends.

Correct score prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City
