Barcelona’s head coach Xavi Hernandez has expressed his shock over the fate that has befallen his former teammate Dani Alves after the latter was remanded in prison on suspicion of a sexual assault committed at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.

Trouble brewing for Dani Alves

Alves was arrested on January 20, 2023, and was said to have been answering questions at the Mossos d'Esquadra de Les Corts police station. Still, the matter escalated when Alves was brought before the Ciutat de la Justicia, which ruled that the former Barcelona full-back should be jailed without bail while investigations continue.

As a result of the brewing scandal, Alves' club at the time, Mexican side Pumas, have already moved to terminate the 39-year-old's contract, which was due to expire in the summer of 2023.

Xavi and Alves were teammates at Barcelona for eight years and dominated Spanish and European football together. They also teamed up again when the Brazilian defender made a second visit to Barcelona when Xavi became coach in 2021.

Xavi wants justice to take its due course

The pair maintained a close relationship during both spells, and Xavi has now said that the allegations leveled against Alves have left him shocked and surprised.

However, the 42-year-old Blaugrana manager has also called for justice to be meted out no matter the outcome.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s fixture against Getafe, Xavi said, “It’s difficult to comment on a situation like this.”

He also added, "I am surprised, shocked, in a state of shock. It’s a question of justice. Justice will rule whatever it is. I feel very bad for Dani. I’m in a state of shock about how he is with us.”

Alves continues to deny any wrongdoing, but will not be able to leave prison until he has been proven innocent as per the court’s ruling.
