Umar featured for Nigeria in the reverse fixture against Sierra Leone, but he is set to miss the return leg next month.

Umar Sadiq is set to miss Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone next month.

The Super Eagles return to competitive action next month when they take on the Leone Stars in the penultimate game of their AFCON 2023 qualifying campaign.

Sadiq injury keeps him out of Nigeria's AFCON clash

However, the three-time African champions will have to navigate the match without the services of Umar Sadiq.

Sadiq played a part in the first leg, which Nigeria won 2-1 in Abuja. However, that was his last appearance for Jose Peseiro’s men as he picked up a long-term injury at his club.

Sadiq has not played since September

Sadiq has been out since September after rupturing his knee in Real Sociedad’s clash against Getafe last September.

The Nigerian walked off the pitch in the 38th minute before it was confirmed he would miss the remainder of the season.

Sadiq preparing for next season

Although Sadiq has now returned to training, Real Sociedad’s coach Imanol Alguacil says it is very unlikely the former Almeria man will play again this season with just three matches to go.

Imanol says the focus for Sadiq is now for him to get fit and firing for next season.

"He is very far away. We are putting him in, but he is very far away. Hopefully, everything goes well and he does a good job on vacation because, unfortunately, he won't be able to stop much. He has to put his batteries together to have a very good pre-season. We want him to evolve well so that he can be available for the start,” Imanol said as per Mundodeportivo.

Umar Sadiq is set to return next season
Sadiq Umar was welcomed back in training by his Real Sociedad teammates after spending most the season on the sidelines.

With Imanol ruling Sadiq out of Sociedad’s last three games, the Super Eagles star is now set to miss the Sierra Leone clash.

Although Sadiq may have recovered fully before then, he is unlikely to risk his fitness for the AFCON qualifying clash.
