Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 14 points from nine matches, behind South Africa (15 points) and the Benin Republic (17 points). The three-time African champions must win and hope South Africa drops points against Rwanda to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

What Ekong said

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the difficult position Nigeria finds themselves in but vowed that the team will fight to the end.

“There are players here who want to make names for themselves, and those who will want their names to go down well in history. So, they are fully prepared and will play to win,” he said.

“Tomorrow may not be 100 per cent in our hands, but we will do our best and win the match," he added.

The Super Eagles, who last featured at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, are under pressure to deliver after an inconsistent qualification campaign that has seen them drop crucial points in earlier matches.
