Ademola Lookman has confirmed that the Super Eagles entered the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the sole objective of winning the tournament.
The three-time champions had been in formidable form, boasting a perfect record with five straight wins before their semi-final clash.
However, their impressive run was cut short in a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to the host nation, Morocco, denying them a spot in the final.
Nigeria secured a third-place finish after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt on Saturday. The Atalanta forward coolly dispatched the winning spot-kick to ensure his team left with a medal.

What Lookman said
Considered strong contenders for the title after a dominant group stage, Nigeria refocused their efforts on the third-place playoff to guarantee a podium finish.
Speaking to beIN SPORTS after the match, Lookman reflected on the team's campaign. "Everyone wanted to win the gold medal; we came for the trophy, but it didn't happen," he said. "We leave this tournament with the bronze medal, and that is enough."
Lookman was a standout performer at AFCON 2025, contributing three goals and four assists—more goal involvements than any other player in the competition.
His performance puts him in strong contention for a place in the official AFCON Team of the Tournament.
This marks the ninth time the Super Eagles have claimed the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations, having previously achieved this feat in 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2019.
