A former teammate of Michael Carrick's has opened up on the difference between the Man a United manager and his Arsenal contemporary
Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Arsenal not only shook up the Premier League title race but also sparked debate about the contrasting approaches of Mikel Arteta and Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils’ late victory at the Emirates highlighted how fine margins on the touchline can influence what happens on the pitch.
Phil Jones points to Arteta’s touchline impact on Arsenal
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones, who played alongside Carrick at Old Trafford, suggested that Arteta’s animated presence may have had a negative effect on his players during key moments.
“If you're watching him on the touchline [you notice] he's agitated. He's up, he's down, he's got his hands in the air. I get it, he's passionate, he wants to win he's so determined and he wants it so much,” Jones said.
He added that this energy can sometimes transmit nerves to the team, especially in tight games.“Sometimes you look over at the touchline and it maybe rubs off on the players a little bit. They get the ball and it's a bit panicky, everything is rushed,” Jones explained, pointing to how Arsenal failed to fully control the match after taking the lead and later after equalising late on.
Carrick’s calm and bold call earns praise
In contrast, Jones was full of praise for Carrick’s composure and decision-making, particularly after Arsenal made it 2-2 in the 84th minute.
“On the flip side of that, I thought Michael [Carrick] was calm, cool as a Cucumber,” he said.
Rather than settling for a point, Carrick opted to go on the offensive, a move Jones described as brave but decisive.“When they went 2-2, they had a discussion and they could have quite easily gone ‘We’ll throw in another centre-half, let's try and see the game out, four points against two big clubs.’
"But no, they went Sesko, they smelt blood and it's ballsy but it's the right call to do,” Jones added.
That bold approach was rewarded when Matheus Cunha struck a sensational late winner, lifting United into fourth place and cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to just four points, reigniting a title race that suddenly feels wide open again.
