The Golden Eaglets are joint record champions of the competition having won in Seychelles in 2001, and in Togo in 2007, but have failed to make the finals in ten years.

The four teams to make the semifinals of the competition are expected to represent Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, a tournament that Nigeria have won on five occasions.
