Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed that he wanted to play for Liverpool one more time
Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an emotional goodbye at Anfield on Sunday, expressing his deep desire to wear the red shirt one final time before ending his long-standing association with the club.
What Arnold said
In what was his final appearance for Liverpool, the 26-year-old was introduced at halftime to thunderous applause and chants of "the Scouser in our team" as fans set aside recent tensions to celebrate the local hero’s two-decade contribution to the club.
“I didn’t know what to expect stepping out at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to play for the club one more time,” Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports.
He continued, “The reception I got means the world to me. I have played hundreds of games but have never felt so loved and cared for.”
Earlier this month, Alexander-Arnold confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season amid widespread reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
His announcement was met with mixed reactions, including boos from some fans during his first game after the news broke. Despite the noise, his teammates, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, came to his defence, and former manager Jürgen Klopp expressed his dismay over the backlash, admitting he turned off his television upon hearing the jeers.
But Sunday was a different story, returning to a raucous Anfield, the full-back, who made his debut under Klopp in 2016, was visibly moved as he received an ovation from the stands.
Tears flowed at the final whistle as he embraced his teammates and received his Premier League winners' medal, an emotional punctuation mark to an illustrious Liverpool career.
Thumping the Liverpool badge on his chest and raising his arms in gratitude, he declared the moment “the best day for me in my life.”
“From the bottom of my heart, I hope that one day the fans and supporters will recognise what I did for the team,” he added, acknowledging the mixed feelings surrounding his exit.
Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool as one of its most iconic academy graduates, a Champions League and Premier League winner, and a symbol of Merseyside pride.
