Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has told the Reds how to deal with Mohamed Salah
Virgil van Dijk has weighed in on the growing Mohamed Salah controversy, offering support for his longtime teammate while insisting the situation must be handled internally by Liverpool.
The Dutchman begged for unity after the Reds’ 1-0 win over Inter Milan, saying the focus must remain on the team despite the noise surrounding Salah’s absence.
Van Dijk calls for calm as Salah exiled from first team
Speaking after the victory in Italy, van Dijk made it clear that he would not dictate who should apologise in the ongoing fallout between Salah and the club.
"It's not up to me to say who should apologise. It's him airing his feelings," he said, noting that the matter goes beyond any single player.
He stressed that Liverpool must handle the situation collectively: "The club have to deal with it and him as well. It's a collective situation. Things between Mo and the club are going on, and he is obviously not here today helping us get three points."
He reminded reporters of their long relationship, saying, "I know Mo a long time. He is a friend… We speak, those type of things will stay indoors."
Slot insists focus must return to results
Despite the turmoil, the Reds held firm as Dominik Szoboszlai converted a late penalty to secure a crucial European win against Inter.
After the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot urged reporters to prioritise the performance rather than Salah’s absence, but eventually responded to persistent questions about the drama.
He acknowledged the emotional toll of the past week, especially following the late collapse against Leeds United. "That was already emotional, what happened after took away energy as well," Slot admitted.
He also hinted that responsibility for resolving the fallout must be shared, saying, "Well, you say everyone makes mistakes in life but the question is should the players also recognise that as well. And should the initiative come from the player or me."
Despite the off-field tension, Slot praised his squad for securing a hard-earned win over Inter, a result that gives Liverpool much-needed momentum as the Salah situation continues to unfold.
