Nigeria's hopes of snatching another foreign-born player for the Super Eagles have taken a huge blow

Noah Atubolu has made history and, in doing so, effectively shut the door on a potential switch to the Super Eagles.

The 23-year-old SC Freiburg goalkeeper etched his name into the record books during Germany’s dramatic 3-2 semi-final victory over the Netherlands at the 2025 UEFA European U21 Championship, breaking a record long held by legendary shot-stopper Manuel Neuer.

Atubolu surpasses Neuer, locks in German allegiance

Atubolu's performance at the ongoing U21 Euros has not only captured the attention of fans but also that of senior national team manager Julian Nagelsmann, who is closely monitoring the Freiburg goalkeeper.

By making his 21st appearance for Germany’s U21 side, Atubolu overtook Manuel Neuer’s long-standing record of 20 appearances at that level.

Since debuting in 2022 with a clean sheet against Latvia, the Nigeria-eligible keeper has become a cornerstone for the U21 team, building his reputation with consistent, high-level performances.

Despite being eligible to represent Nigeria through his heritage, Atubolu has shown every indication that his heart lies with Die Mannschaft, especially with the German coaching staff, including Nagelsmann's goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg, his mentor at Freiburg, now firmly in his corner.

At club level, Atubolu's rise has been just as impressive. During the 2024/25 Bundesliga season, the Freiburg-born talent recorded 10 clean sheets in 26 games, helping SC Freiburg secure a Europa League spot.

His reflexes, composure under pressure, and commanding presence in the box have led many to tout him as Germany’s next big goalkeeping star.

While Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle may still hold hope of a late switch, Atubolu’s recent exploits suggest he is firmly committed to Germany's future between the sticks.
