Napoli managed to overcome bottom side Salernitana in Serie A thanks to a last gasp extra time winner

Despite missing stars like Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Cameroon’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Napoli managed to wrestle past Salernitana in Serie A to start the new year on the right foot.

Napoli with last-gasp win over Salernitana

The Partenopei, who ended last year with worrying form in the league, managed to pick up their first victory in four league games with a 2-1 home win over bottom club Salernitana to climb back into the top six.

A penalty from Matteo Politano and a 92nd-minute strike from Amir Rrahmani were enough to overturn Antonio Candreva’s opening goal for the visitors and earn Napoli a crucial victory in the absence of several stars.

The win puts Napoli temporarily in sixth place above Atalanta, Lazio, and Roma, all of whom could still usurp the reigning champions with wins of their own.
