The Jewels of Rivers soared to victory over the previously dominant Edo Queens, clinching a hard-fought 2-1 win and a N2 million prize.

Rivers Angels star, Adugbe Olamide has celebrated her teammates for their heroics win against Edo Queens in Matchday two of the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League Super 6 in Bayelsa.

The Jewels of Rivers soared to victory over the previously dominant Edo Queens, clinching a hard-fought 2-1 win and a N2 million prize.

Edo Queens 1-2 Rivers Angels

Rivers Angels secured their first victory of the playoffs, edging Edo Queens 2-1 in a South-South derby at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Bayelsa state.

Florence Alexander put Rivers Angels on the scoreboard in the 11th minute with a well-placed free kick that surprisingly eluded Edo Queens' goalkeeper, Ijeoma Uzoma.

Ogbonda Whyte's side extended their lead in the 28th minute thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Valentina Uroko of Edo Queens.

Emem Essien refused to let Edo Queens go down without a fight. She dribbled past one defender before slotting the ball past Rivers Angels keeper Ademola Morufa to bring her team back into the game.

Both teams had second-half goals disallowed, with Deborah Odiagbe (Rivers Angels) and Sefiat Idris (Edo Queens) seeing their efforts ruled out.

Reacting after the game, Olamide showered her teammates with praise, acknowledging their tremendous effort that secured the win.

She also expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Commissioner of Sports for his continued motivation and support for the team.

"The atmosphere here is fantastic, I have to give kudos to the entire team for their incredible effort and teamwork in getting the win against Edo Queens.

"I'm thrilled to be here and while I'm always pushing to score goals, the most exciting thing for me is being part of this team, Rivers Angels. The commissioner's support is also a huge motivator for us all, " she told Pulse Sports

With the win, the jewel of Rivers top the table alongside Bayelsa Queens, both teams level on four points.

Next up for Rivers Angels is a clash against Nasarawa Amazons on Wednesday.
