Los Blancos have suffered a second long-term injury following the Brazilian’s setback, days after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was ruled out for the whole season.

Real Madrid have suffered another major injury blow following confirmation that centre-back Eder Militao has torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) which will keep him out for at least six months.

Militao suffered the nasty injury to his knee during his side's 2023-24 LALIGA opener on Saturday night as Los Blancos started their campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

Rodrygo opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Jude Bellingham doubled the away side's advantage eight minutes later.

The win came at a cost, though, with key defender Militao being forced off in the early stages of the second period due to the knee injury.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said after the match that the Brazil international had "sprained his knee", and would undergo tests to determine the extent of the damage, with the confirmation adding to his woes at a time the season is just starting.

"He sprained his knee. It doesn't look good and we will assess it in the next few hours. Hopefully, it's nothing serious. We're concerned and we're not ruling anything out," Ancelotti told reporters.

Real Madrid have already lost their number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to a serious knee injury, with the Belgium international set to miss the whole of the season after damaging his ACL.

Madrid are close to agreeing a deal with Chelsea for Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a one-year loan deal to cover for the absence of the Belgian custodian and could be forced into the market yet again for a defender in light of Militao’s injury.

His absence leaves Madrid with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba as the only recognised centre-backs although Spanish defender Nacho Fernandez can also slot it.

Ancelotti could also be forced to field French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga in central defence if he does not get another defender in before the transfer window shuts.
